How can anxiety affect my sleep?
Yes certainly. Anxiety can increase your heart rate also it increases stress hormone secretion, which makes your brain go into a fight or flight response. Since your brain becomes hyperactive sleep hormone levels also get reduced, hence sleep disturbance occurs. So before bed practice some mindfulness meditation or take a few deep breaths to de-stress.
I find it hard to sit and meditate, I'll probably start by trying the deep breaths 👍 thanks!
Anxiety can affect rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. This is the phase of sleep when you tend to have vivid dreams. If you have anxiety, the dreams may be disturbing or turn into nightmares that wake you. Just as anxiety can affect sleep, sleep can affect anxiety.
Oh wow. That's a catch 22 scenario..
