The oral cavity is home to billions of microorganisms, some of which contribute to the progression of several diseases. Thus, it is important to keep the mouth clean, so as to rid it of the harmful microbes. OIL PULLING is a traditional remedy in which the oils( sesame/ coconut/ sunflower) "pull" the microbes from the oral cavity. Antioxidants generated by oil pulling, kill the microorganisms ! Cold pressed oils work best, but, refined will do too. 1/2 - 1 Tbsp of oil is swished around the mouth every morning, on an empty stomach for 10- 20 min. The viscous oil should become milky white & thinner. Then spit it out, into a trash can to avoid clogging of drains. Wash the mouth well with warm saline water & the teeth with fingers. Ensure that the oil is not swallowed as it contains bacteria and toxins. Oil pulling is contraindicated for children below 5 years due to risk of aspiration. In conditions where brushing is difficult( eg. Ulcers) oil pulling helps maintain oral hygiene 🙂🙂
