The hypothalamus & pituitary gland communicate with the thyroid gland to maintain the balance of T3 & T4( thyroid hormones) In Hypothyroidism, T3 & T4 levels are low, so.. Hypothalamus ---> releases TSH Releasing Hormone[ TRH] ---> signals the pitutary gland to release more TSH( thyroid stimulating hormone). Common symptoms include weight gain, brittle nails, muscle cramps, low stamina, dryness of skin, hair loss, intolerance to cold. Other, important but less known facts of hypothyroidism, if not timely managed are: * in pregnancy, it can lead to growth retardation in the child * can lead to elevated levels of the bad cholesterol, triglyceride( increasing chances of fatty liver) * brings down heart rate - so, increasing episodes of fainting * can lead to memory loss( which is reversible if levels are corrected) Timely diagnosis & medication, a healthy lifestyle (balanced diet + regular exercise ) are important in management. More on the right diet in my post tomorrow 🤗
