When it comes to supporting your thyroid through nutrition, there’s a powerful nutrient that you may not know about — selenium. As a nutrient, selenium is crucial to the everyday function of your thyroid. It reduces the thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO) and the severity of hypothyroidism symptoms. Selenium is known to enhance the efficacy of antithyroid drugs and to ameliorate( improve) thyroid function in hyperthyroidism It plays also an essential role in the metabolism of thyroid hormones & contributes to the antioxidant defense in the thyroid. Chicken, fish, shellfish, and eggs contain high amounts of selenium. Brazil nuts, green peas, sunflower seeds are good sources of this micronutrient too. Watch out for symptoms such as weakness or pain in the muscles, hair or skin discoloration, whitening of the fingernail beds which may indicate that your body is not receiving the recommended allowance of this mineral
