About Shyft

  • What is Shyft?

Shyft is a gym to train your mind offering workouts and programmes to enable the mind to do more.

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, our mental fitness takes a toll. Be it driving in rush hour traffic to work related stress or personal life issues, we de-prioritize our mental well being and turn to quick fixes to relax, de-stress and focus our minds. At Shyft, you’ll learn how to reshape your response to stress and anxiety. How to improve your focus to always get in the zone. How to raise your energy levels and lift “brain fog.”

  • How does this work?

We offer guided courses by expert trainers at our state of the art studio. We also have an app which provides access to 10 min daily sessions to help you practice at home.

  • What is the basis of the courses?

Scientific research in the space of neuroscience and positive psychology has shown that meditation and breathing exercises have had clinically proven results on reducing stress and anxiety and on improving overall mental fitness.

Our courses are designed on the techniques used in meditation, yoga and breathing exercises to help you achieve optimal results keeping in mind your daily grinding schedule.

We at Shyft don’t propose or push any religious or spiritual philosophy. We believe that mind fitness should become a way of life and everyone should be able to benefit from it.

  • Who creates your courses?

Our courses are designed by expert practitioners of meditation and yoga

  • Who are your trainers?

Our trainers are professionally trained from renowned institutes of yoga and meditation. They have over 2000hrs of classroom training and have conducted workshops both in India and abroad.

  • How do I start?

You need to buy a package of classes from our website or app. You can also buy a package from our studio.

Once you have bought a package, you can use the app to book your class according to your convenience.

  • How do I choose a course for myself?

You can choose a course relevant to you by choosing from 5 different goals on the app – Better Sleep, Focus, Patience, Relaxed body and Relaxed mind. Once you have chosen the goals you want to work on, our app will suggest the courses most suited for you and you make your choice from those.

  • How can I buy a course? How do I buy multiple courses?

You can buy a package of classes from the web or app. You do not need to buy separate packages for different courses. You can use the same package to book classes for different courses.

About the Class

  • Are these group sessions or one-on-one sessions?

All the classes are group sessions. We do not conduct one-on-one sessions.

  • How can I book a class?

You can only book a class on the app in advance. You can find the schedule for date and time for different courses on the app and can book your class according to the slot convenient for you from that schedule section.

  • Can I cancel a class I had booked previously?

You will be able to cancel a booking only upto 24 hrs before a class. You will be charged if you cancel within 12 hours from a class you have booked.

You can cancel your booking from within the app.

  • Is attending one class per week enough?

We recommend you should attend at least 2 classes every week, so that you are able to learn and retain the best practices from the trainers, and practice them daily at home.

  • What should I wear to the class?

We recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothes.

  • Do I need to watch what I eat before the class?

There are no restrictions to what you should eat before attending the class. But you should keep at least 1 hour gap between your meal and class. In case you plan to eat a heavy meal, we recommend a 2 hour gap.

  • What is the structure of the class?

Your instructor will walk you through the specifics of the class in the session – typically every class involves a warm up at the start to prepare your body and cool down after the class to let the exercises sync in. If it is your first class, we’d suggest that you stay back for 10 mins after the class to know more about the techniques involved and the specific benefits they bring.

  • Is this the right course for me?

Each class is different and solves for a set of goals. We recommend classes for you based on your selected goals. If the class is solving for one of your chosen goals then this is the right class for you. You can also use the “Suited For” field in every class description to figure out if this class will work for you. Once you have chosen a class try to stick to it for 2-3 sessions to figure out if this is working for you.

  • I want to try a different course

You can easily switch to take a class for a different course, but we recommend to stick to a course for at least 2-3 sessions. If at the end of 2-3 sessions, you feel that the course is not working for you, you can easily schedule to attend classes for another course on the app.

  • I am not able to find time to practice sessions at home

Benefits of any exercise are seen with regular practice. We believe twice a week studio sessions and not enough and so our at-home modules are designed to get you into the habit of practicing everyday. Like any other habit formation, initially you will find it difficult but once you get into it, you will find it easy to do this regularly. The initial couple of months are hard so be easy on yourself. A few things can help here – practice at the same time everyday, remember the why? And trust the technique. If you feel a bit more settled after an at-home session, then soak in that feeling. If a particular technique helped you take the edge off some difficult emotions, then spend some time recognising that.

  • I am not making any progress in my exercises? Am I doing this right?

Any technique that involves rewiring your brain never progresses in a constant, linear way. There are always ups and downs. One day you’re sitting there and you unexpectedly find that you’re blissfully happy, without any distractions. The next day your mind is all over the place. This is normal, and it’s good to relax, and not be obsessed about “getting somewhere.” One of the main signs of progress, though, is being more relaxed about making progress.

  • I am not able to focus during the class and my mind keeps wandering

This is completely natural – mind workout is no different from body/ physical workout. Every time your mind wanders and your bring it back to focus on an object (say breath) it’s like flexing your muscles. The more you flex, the stronger they get. The objective is not to be in a Zen state all the time with no thoughts, but be able to recognise that your mind has wandered and bring it back to the object of focus. This can be hard initially but hang in there and you will get past it.

If after a 5-8 classes this is still too hard, we would recommend that you try one of the more active classes. You can find the details of all the courses on the app.

  • I am not seeing any improvements after the class

Not all changes are noticeable in the short term. Our classes involve rewiring of your brain in helpful ways. Can you tell whether or not new neurons have been generated, or whether new connections between neurons have been built? Of course not. But it’s happening anyway. It might take a few months for those changes to manifest in anything perceptible. All our classes are designed to have a calming and relaxing effect, but don’t expect them to be a quick fix – like swallowing a pain relief tablet. So in the meantime, just relax and get on with the exercises.

  • I am feeling pain/physical discomfort after class

Some of our classes involve movement of the body to increase mobility and flexibility in the body. These exercises help in connecting mind and body and involve stretching your muscles – muscle soreness a day or two after exercising is normal and can affect anyone, regardless of your fitness level. But don’t be put off. This type of muscle pain is normal and doesn’t last long. It’s actually a sign of your improving fitness. If the pain persists for more than 3 days or you face acute pain during your practice please talk to your instructor.

  • I am feeling sleepy during class

Some of our courses are lying down courses and it’s easy to drift off to sleep when you are starting out. So don’t worry too much if you occasionally doze off during the first few weeks. If it keeps happening though, try a different time of day or try a more active class. You can find the details of all the courses on the app.

  • How should I feel after the class?

All our classes are designed to leave a calming and relaxing effect on you. However at times you may feel some negative emotions like impatience, irritation, rage, sadness etc. This is natural. And it’s not a bad thing. We often tend to suppress these emotions but the more we push them the more they insistently spring back up. So, instead of avoiding them, try allowing them to be present (with restraint of course). Give them the space they need to arise, unravel and fall away. Mind exercises also have physiological effects so your body might feel hot or cold after the class – this is perfectly normal. We ask for your feedback after the class just for this, to get a sense of your feelings after the class – if a course in not working for you, we would recommend other courses for you. Feel free to reach out to your instructor.
