Mental Health

So, you’ve started therapy – congratulations! That's a huge step towards self-care and improving your mental wellness. But here’s a question that might be on your mind: ‘Is my therapist the right one for me?’ Finding the right therapist can be hard - but it’s crucial, because so much of your progress depends on your relationship with your therapist. If you’re struggling to understand if you’re with the right therapist, here are a few questions to ask yourself to figure out if your therapist is a great fit for you. Do you feel heard and not judged? Your therapist should be that person who provides a safe space for you, listens without judgment, understands your perspective, and makes you feel heard. If you find yourself looking forward to these sessions as a safe space where your thoughts and feelings are validated, you're probably in the right company. Are they professional and respectful? A good therapist is like a guide in your mental health journey – professional, respectful, and consistent. They should respect your boundaries, be punctual and, above all, maintain confidentiality. If you feel like they’re crossing lines or making you feel uncomfortable, it might be time to look for an alternative. Is there progress on your journey? Now this one is a tricky one, because progress in therapy can be like watching a plant grow; it’s slow and gradual but, if you have patience, ultimately rewarding. You might not see changes overnight, but over time, you should notice improvements in your mental health, coping strategies, and overall well-being. It’s also important to discuss with your therapist what your progress journey can look like - and if you feel like you’re consistently falling short, or going in circles, it might be time to reassess. Do they challenge you (in a good way)? The best kind of therapists challenge you to grow – but in a way that feels supportive, not overwhelming. They should encourage you to face difficult issues and step out of your comfort zone, but always at a pace that feels right for you. Do their methods align with your needs? Just like everyone has a favorite diet or workout, therapy, too, needs to fit your preferences. If you’re someone who’s goal-oriented and looking for a structured approach, an approach that’s more unstructured or outcome-oriented might frustrate you. On the other hand, if you’re someone who’s looking to dig deeper into your past or generational trauma, you might not do well with someone who assigns you a lot of structured “homework”. It’s all about finding that therapeutic approach that resonates with your personality and needs. Takeaway Finding the right therapist can be a game-changer in your mental health journey. It’s important to feel comfortable, supported, and challenged in the right ways. Remember, it’s okay to try different therapists and approaches until you find that perfect match. After all, this is about your well-being, and you deserve the best support on this journey.
